DETEXI NVR Storage Needs
1. Overview
As the recordings specifications and number of cameras in an application vary, so do the storage requirements in order to meet the needs of the application. When designing an IP Surveillance System, the following parameters will dictate your storage needs:
  • Number of cameras to be recorded
  • Video Resolution of recordings
  • Recording Sample Rate in Frames Per Second (FPS)
  • Active Recording Percentage
  • Video Retention Time
It is common for different cameras to require different quality recordings. For this reason, it is important to know ahead of time where your cameras will be pointing, and how critical the video of that area is.
It is more common to sacrifice Recording Sample Rate (FPS) to preserve the highest possible Video Resolution in recordings. This allows for crisper images of faces, license plates, etc. even when the fluidity of the video is not perfect.
A typical recording quality of IP video is 4CIF (704x480) resolution or similar and between 3-6 FPS. Megapixel cameras are starting to become more common now as well, supporting maximum resolutions in the range of 1600x1200.
